Marcus Foster Interview: On Touring Plans and Songs with Rob
May 25th, 2009 | filed in: Internet/Bloggers, Music, Twilight Soundtrack

Marcus Foster, who was a co-songwriter of “Let Me Sign” on the Twilight soundtrack, has done another interview with the Twilight Examiner.  He discusses his touring plans and writing music with Rob.

marcus-foster-smilingMarcus Foster, co-author of the Twilight soundtrack’s “Let Me Sign” (with Bobby Long) and singer and songwriter behind the lovely “I Don’t Mind” and “Tumble Down” (which he said before he always enjoyed playing), has been keeping busy over in the U.K. with plans, according to his Twitter page, “as soon as I get my Visa sorted . . . to play lots more shows in America including L[.A.] and New York.”

The first announced of said appearances (as of right now) will take place at the TwiCon festival in Dallas, Texas at the end of the summer.

Marcus Foster was kind enough to  (again) grant me an exclusive interview, with updates and insights galore for us all to enjoy.

Before May, Foster was, according to some, a rather “mysterious” person, but when he started using Twitter, the man became a mystery no more. I asked Foster if there was any particular reason why we have been hearing from him more often. Said he, “Have you? I never really know what’s going on. I guess more people are, hopefully, interested in what I do, and I’m booking more shows, and more people seem to be coming. It still seems quite slow. I’m doing it all myself, so it’s taking a bit longer than my friends, I’m really disorganized.”

As a bit of a Renaissance man, that so-called “disorganization” may, in part, be due to the fact that Foster wears many coats. Not only is he a singer and songwriter, but he is also a student and sculptor. I asked him if he could tell us a little bit more about his sculpting. Said Foster, “I’m doing my M.A. at the moment. I’ve got a show coming up, and, so far, I’ve made lots of sign posts and a large steel sculpture for the wall that looks a bit like an elongated domed awning. I might do some wall paintings – my work at the moment kind of addresses the ideas around place and meeting points.” It is surely, if by the hands of Marcus Foster, a thing of beauty. Foster said that he will finish his school work “this time next year.” (Unlike his friend Bobby Long, touring in the U.S. might not be something Foster can write up to field studies.)

marcus-foster-cobden-club-1Despite his busied schedule, though, Foster has by no means been neglecting his singing and songwriting. Recently “tweeting” about a new song he wrote in France (and his desire to play it at his show two nights ago), I asked Foster whether he ever did end up playing it. Said he, he did in fact, “and it went well. My friends seem to like it… it’s like releasing a child or an animal into the world, I still don’t know what to call it yet or if it will survive out in the open.” Meanwhile, Foster is also working on getting an EP released on iTunes at the moment as well. Said he, “I hope to get a release date soon, sorry for the wait.”

In the meantime, Foster is also preparing himself for his trip to the United States. About planning the tour, Foster said, “I just hope there will be a good crowd, I worry sometimes if I book shows in America not many people will show up. I always get nervous before shows but once I’m up there I’m fine.” Otherwise, he said that “I’m excited about playing everywhere really.”

Promising to link up with Bobby Long during his tour of the States, Foster said that it will be manager extraordinaire Phil Taylor to give him a hand. Said he to a question of which shows he’ll be joining Long on, “Bobby’s manager is booking the shows, and he will book lots of shows for me when I sort out my Visa, so I’m not entirely sure yet.”

Meanwhile, Foster says that there “are always songs in the works.” Continued Foster, “some have been stuck in my head like dead birds, but I’m currently working on two in the studio that sound good, and I still have loads I need to record. I wrote quite a few songs with Rob so I’m hopefully going to record some with him and possibly do some shows with him when I go to New York.”

Speaking of Rob, Foster’s song “Let Me Sign,” which was sung by Pattinson but co-authored by Foster and Bobby Long was a big hit in the U.S., yet Bobby Long said that couldn’t play it today if someone asked him to. I asked Foster whether he could, and he said “I have some recordings of me Bobby and Rob singing that song on New Years Day really drunk. They sound really good, I will probably only do that again if it was with them.”

Finally, I asked Foster whether he had changed his mind about which word he would choose to describe himself with if he only got to use one (last time I interviewed him, he choose “indecisive”), and he said “thirsty.” Was that a Twiight pun, there? Hmm…

In closing, said Foster about his plans to tour in the United States, “I can’t wait. When I book my shows in L.A. and New York and some other places, please come along. Bring your bells, I’ll bring mine.”
