Tate plays Karen Cooper, who feels life has passed her by while she’s been taking care of other people. She became a mum too young and is now looking after her own mother (Anne Reid), who has Alzheimer’s. As the story begins, Karen is applying for her birth certificate so she can get a passport and visit Paris. But her teenage daughter Charlie (Holly Grainger) becomes pregnant, bringing simmering resentments between them to an ugly boil. To make matters worse, Karen’s birth certificate reveals she was adopted. An absorbing, warts-and-all family drama that doesn’t descend into sickly sentimentality.
