Daniel Radcliffe had a good weekend, but where does his career stack up against that of another actor who’s likewise trying to prove his worth outside of a somewhat-popular franchise?

Let’s take a look.

It’s Harry Potter’s Radcliffe vs. Twilight’s Robert Pattinson:

ROUND ONE: THE ART-HOUSE DEBUT

Radcliffe’s December Boys came and went in 2007; Pattinson’s Little Ashes came and went in 2009.

And while Little Ashes wound up making eight times as much money domestically as December Boys, December Boys wound up making about four times as much money internationally as Little Ashes.

Shall we call it even?

No.

The Winner: Pattinson. Radcliffe might have had to appear on screen for the first time in his Potter career without his Potter glasses, but Pattinson had to overcome a black dye-job and a Salvador Dali mustache.

ROUND TWO: THE WIDE-RELEASE DEBUT

Radcliffe’s The Woman in Black very nearly took No. 1 in the latest box-office campaign, with a surprisingly strong $21 million.

Pattinson’s Remember Me, a 2010 film, debuted in fifth place, with a so-so $8 million.

Radcliffe gets points for having the smarts to go with a period piece (which put his Potter vibe to good use, and proved much less jarring than, say, seeing him kick it in a rom-com) and a money genre (no, haunted house movies never do get old).

Pattinson gets points for having the bravery to go with a non-money genre (romantic drama), and for having the star power to turn the $16 million film into a $56 million worldwide money-maker.

The winner: Actually, let’s call this one even. Radcliffe’s weekend was strong, but so is Pattinson’s leading-man mojo.

ROUND THREE: THE BOTTOM LINE

By Box Office Mojo’s count, Radcliffe has been the star of 10 movies that have combined to gross $2.4 billion domestically; Pattinson has been the star of eight movies with a combined domestic gross of $1.4 billion.

The winner: Radcliffe, obviously.

THE VERDICT

If and when Radcliffe produces another non-Potter hit, then he’ll have the title outright, but for now he shares it with Pattinson, who has proven his worth by selling tough-to-sell movies.

Until “Mildred Pierce” came along, Turner’s coolest assignment was a small role in “Remember Me” starring Robert Pattinson. It made her the envy of the schoolyard.

“I didn’t really get to talk to him,” she reports of the “Twilight” hunk. “But I was in his presence. And that counts.”

Then there’s Robert. He was first to test the non-Twilight waters with 2010′s Remember Me — a movie that cast him as a lovelorn but wayward soul. It should have been manna from heaven to the fanbase that tracks his every move and facial hair growth. No one cared. The film opened with $8 million and went on to gross a paltry $19 million.

But even still, the assumption is that even the worst film should be buoyed by this massively dedicated and passionate Twilight fanbase. A theory each film’s opening weekend pretty much invalidates. Even alongside former box office queen Reese Witherspoon, 2011′s Water For Elephants was a financial disappointment.

The question becomes this; Outside of the Twilight franchise, does anyone care about their work? My guess is that they will, once Stephenie Meyer’s cinematic saga comes to a conclusion. For the time being, each is locked into being their big screen doppelgangers. Fans don’t want to see Edward romancing anyone but Bella, they don’t want to see Bella acting like a wasted rock star and they don’t want to see Jacob trying desperately to find his parents. We know who his father is. It’s Billy Black.

But that won’t (and really shouldn’t) stop them from trying to forge their post-Twilight career paths. As I said, Kristen’s upcoming Snow White film looks fabulous while Taylor and Robert have been spending time with auteurs like Gus Van Sant and David Cronenberg, making me think they’ve both decided to take a page out of Kristen’s more desirable playbook.

Before we get Robert’s Cronenberg collaboration, 2012′s Cosmopolis, his Merchant Ivory-esque period drama Bel Ami will unfold on screens. The film casts him as a young man who rises to prominence in turn of the century Paris while splitting his time between beds belonging to Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci. Will Twilight fans trek out for this film? History has me leaning towards the negatory — but check out the newly released trailer and decide for yourself!
