It’s a good time to be Talulah Riley.

Riley is a hardworking English actress best known to younger audiences as one of the loveable miscreants in the St. Trinian’s film series, Pirate Radio and TV’s Dr. Who.  The 24-year-old’s career is on a pretty intense international upswing thanks to an appearance opposite Twilight’s Robert Pattinson in the iTunes original short The Summer House and a part in a little something called Inception.

Let’s start with The Summer House.  Riley is a beautiful but reserved English girl who decides to spend the summer of 1969 in a friend’s French estate to recover from a broken heart, when out of the bushes comes Pattinson.  The Summer House packs a lot of heat into just a few minutes.

Monsters and Critics - There are just 12 minutes to get to know Jane in Summer House.  But you made her a dimensional person – how?

Talulah Riley - Daisy spent a lot of time with Rob and me discussing the back-story, so we were aware of our characters situations and the decisions they’d made to get them to the point where the audience meets them, in the film.  Action is character, as they say, so just knowing that my character was the type of girl who would have to run away to France to get over a break-up, gave me a good place to start.

M&C - How did you get to ‘know’ her?  What did you work on to determine what was she like, and what she thought, who she was?

TR - I was lucky enough to be given a copy of the book The Summer House, by the writer Ian Beck.  This really helped me with the characterization.  Prose is good for filling in the details – especially when there is very little dialogue.

M&C – The Summer House is set in the free love era.  How free was Jane?

TR - Although the film is set in the Swinging 60’s, Jane isn’t really that into free love.  She’s more of a true romantic – idealistic, gentle, loyal, and intensely hurt by her lover’s betrayal.

M&C - Your Summer House lover, Robert Pattinson has been struck by a movie supernova.  Did you work together during or before Twilight?

TR - I worked with Rob before Twilight.  I’m very happy for his success.  It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.  He’s a lovely actor and a lovely friend.

M&C - Is he a good kisser? Neck nuzzler?

TR - He’s a very good neck nuzzler.

M&C - The world of exhibition is changing so much.  The Summer House has just been released on iTunes.  What kind of impact will non-conventional, non-theatrical releases have on the business?

TR - I think things like iTunes are great for the business.  It means something like The Summer House, which would conventionally only have a very limited release, can be reached by a much larger audience.

Robert Pattinson’s 2008 short film, “The Summer House” dominated iTunes immediately following its recent release, topping movie sales charts in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, and Germany after a mere four hours. The July 13th iTunes release marked the first occasion on which the film had been distributed for mass consumption, having only been run on the festival circuit during the prior year.

The film is an adaptation of a coming-of-age story in which a teenage girl (Jane) summering at an aunt’s chateau in rural France discovers the complexity of romantic relationships—both those of certain family members, as well as her own. Rob plays the role of 18-year-old Richard, the love interest of Jane. Having broken up with her to date another woman prior to her departure for the summer, once dumped by the other, he appears unexpectedly at Jane’s retreat to win her back. Through a series of benign advances (e.g., love letters) and other more forceful attempts, he pushes Jane to come farther into herself.

Having been shot just prior to the release of “Twilight”, “The Summer House” will be regarded as one of Pattinson’s early works, though by the time he played in “The Summer House”, Pattinson had already acted in other major Hollywood films. The release comes just in time for fans craving more of the international mega-star, whose media exposure has fallen off sharply since the release of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”.

New York – The iTunes release of The Summer House, featuring Twilight star Robert Pattinson, has debuted at number one in 4 territories.

Within hours of it hitting the iTunes Movie Store, the film had already topped movie sales charts in the US, Canada, Ireland and Germany, fending off competition from key blockbusters like Avatar and Green Zone.

“Audiences have spoken. Short movies rock!” said Carter Pilcher, CEO of Shorts International. “As The Summer House’s record-breaking dominance atop the movie chart demonstrates, short movies are the entertainment sweet spot for fans who are shifting to shorter, sharper bursts of entertainment.”

Shorts International will release The Continuing and Lamentable Saga of the Suicide Brothers starring Rupert Friend (The Young Victoria) and Keira Knightley (Never Let Me Go) on 21 September, exclusively on iTunes.

T is the centre for the boring bits of the British film industry: the PR people, the production offices and the general behind camera stuff that may make you yawn but without which we’d not be able to settle down with the popcorn. So it seems all too fitting that Soho has its very own film festival – and is there to give a hand-up to new talent. Now in its 12th year, the Rushes Soho Shorts festival starts this week and the programme ranges from global premieres to street parties. Highlights include the Flicker Alley Street Party – hosted in historic Cecil Court, the first home of the British film industry back when Queen Vic was on the throne.

The shops there are all mucking in with their own homages to film history. Taking place on Saturday, the event includes screenings of short films and a silent movie screening accompanied by pianist John Sweeney. Other highlights include “guest” films from other festivals, and the ICA and the Curzon group have handed over their auditoriums for shows.

To add to the fun, viewers have the chance to vote in the awards process after each screening, making this a tad more democratic than the Oscars.

While the festival is packed with unknowns, there is also a little bit of movie glamour. Films with cast including Robert Pattinson, Jenny Agutter, Ioan Gruffudd and Natascha McElhone feature, while there are also previously unseen music videos from the likes of Eminen and Franz Ferdinand on show.

And with the added bonus that nine out of ten of the events put on are free, there is no excuse not to have a little look at what is on. • www.sohoshorts.com

Rushes Soho Short Festival, London

London’s film-making quarter becomes a giant screening room, and a level playing field for creatives from around the world or around the corner. Veterans of the event, now in its 12th year, will know what to expect: short films of all descriptions, professional and amateur, in various categories. Except this time there’s even more of it: 170 films from 23 countries. For the classiest stuff, head for the competition screenings to see quality mini-dramas starring the likes of Robert Pattinson (The Summer House) and Jenny Agutter (KODA), plus documentaries, music videos and animation. Plenty of free stuff includes the Straight 8 challenge (shoot a short straight on to a single reel of Super 8, then view the results with an audience), a street party, and sessions on how to get into film-making.

Bella isn’t the only girl Edward gets to stalk these days. If that aspect of The Twilight Saga drives you batty, just wait for this new romance. Robert Pattinson is in a 2008 short film called The Summer House with Talulah Riley (St. Trinian’s), which has just gone up for sale over at iTunes.

Riley plays a young girl visiting her aunt in rural France in 1969, the year of the lunar landings. Her first love (Pattinson) has cheated on her, and while first content with letters exclaiming his love, he soon shows up, uninvited. “She is impossibly tempted, but repelled by his crude attempt to force her.”

Once again, Pattinson is in a goofy wig and looking all pensive and stalkerish, which makes me wonder how d*mn long we have to wait until sometime puts the kid in something perkier. And WHY he’s always got unusual hair (Dali and How to Be topping the list). Is there a ridiculous hair clause added to all of his contracts? A determination to be the polar opposite of his actual personality? I mean, this is the same guy who told Katee Sackhoff, out of the blue: “I’m sorry. I just had a waking dream where my mother was a hamburger and I wanted to eat her.”

Alas, no hamburger comedies are on the way, just more tortured romance. You can nab the 14-minute short for $1.99, if you want more lusty RPatt, or be content with the free trailer below.
