What Dreams May Come. . .
Two best friends from London, England. Two musicians. Two singers with beautiful, soulful voices. One veers off into some acting roles and the other one goes to college. One becomes a superstar due to a tousled-copper-haired, golden-eyed vampire and another graduates from college while launching his career as a performing singer and songwriter. Two best friends with infinite possibilities for happiness. And all because they are following their own natural rhythms and pace in life. Is it some kind of magic?

The mystery of the universe affirms that there is no finite allotment of anything, especially happiness. Mostly, we create our own reality, our own fate and our own luck. Some people just don’t know it. But, we’re beings who are filled with infinite possibilities – just ready to explore how powerful we truly are. We create our reality with every thought, every move, every gesture. Somehow, Rob Pattinson and Marcus Foster have both tapped into that magical space even though they may not realize it. Manifesting the magnificence of our dreams isn’t just about hard work; rather, it is about belief and expectation. A kind of magic, if you will. These principles transcend belief, realizing the truth about our human nature and the connection to the Divine.

Your dreams are not accidental or inconsequential. And if someone were to tell the truth about life, reality and the powers we all possess, would it be recognized? Not by many. Our lives are full of adventures – not exactly the sky-diving, mountain climbing variety – but something so much better. The inner adventures where that magic happens – where the infinite possibilities exist whether we know it or not.

There are natural rhythms – natural flows – in life. When you start enjoying and appreciating that everything you have is already as it should be…when you begin enjoying the present and all that it holds, you become less focused on the future and how you want it to turn out. After all, the Universe knows what you want and by following your own natural rhythms and pace, you can have faith that all your future wants, desires and dreams will manifest. Yes, sometimes life will throw you a curve ball, but those who persevere can get past that. Roadblocks are just meant to strengthen us. Rob Pattinson has been learning that. He had a few roadblocks before Twilight came along. But, through everything – the roadblocks, dreams, desires – all of it – Rob has been a musician. Because music is the essence of his soul.

Rob has said in interviews that he has been playing the piano his entire life since he was three or four. He played classical guitar beginning at age five and has stayed up many nights playing music with his friends including Marcus Foster, who has that same sacred passion for music.

One isn’t sure at this point what roadblocks have been thrown in Marcus’s path, but one thing is for sure: he’s on the road to that magical place where dreams come true and all possibilities lie infinite in wait. Both he and Rob seem to have followed their natural rhythms in life, all the while watching the universe to see if their desires and dreams will manifest. (And wary of any roadblocks, for sure.)

When Rob was filming the first Twilight movie, he said in an interview that he had plans to go to Nashville to pursue music after the movie was done. The universe had other plans. For a temporary, little while, anyway. And yes, it has been some time since we’ve heard Rob Pattinson’s soulful voice in a pub on an open mic night. We were able to enjoy his singing in Twilight when he sang “Never Think, which Rob co-wrote with fellow composer/musician, Sam Bradley, and “Let Me Sign,” which was written by Marcus Foster and Bobby Long. The Twilight soundtrack debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and there’s no doubt that Rob was instrumental in making it a success. He also sang three original songs on the soundtrack for the movie, How to Be including “Chokin’ On the Dust” and “Doin’ Fine,” which were written by composer, Joe Hastings.

Rob turned down the chance to contribute to the soundtrack for the second movie in the Twilight franchise, New Moon, because he wants to keep music as a backup career plan. Actually, pursuing music professionally never was his intention. At the 2009 Comi-Con Convention in San Diego, Rob said he would love to be able to perform at open mics in the future because it’s “good for the soul.” Not because he wants to be a rock/folk star, but simply because he loves it.

For people who love music – whether it’s composing, singing or just listening to it – it becomes the essence – the “breath” of their lives. Without it, their soul withers into nothingness. They need it as much as they need air, water and food. Rob Pattinson seems to need it. Yes, he enjoys acting. That’s obvious. And, he’s brilliant in his roles, especially in Little Ashes and Twilight. But, like his friend, Marcus Foster, music is Rob’s soul. His passion. His muse.

Music brings about a profound integration of every aspect of a person –physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It brings every level of who you are – your thoughts, feelings and physical energies – into alignment to help you gain deeper insight into your life. And maybe that’s why it’s so vital in Rob’s and Marcus’s worlds.

In this creative zone of music, both Rob and Marcus share similar strengths in their music, singing voices and overall musicality. When listening to Rob’s singing, the similarities to Marcus’s voice are obvious. They both have this rich, full timbre in their warbling lyrics. Rob’s voice is passionate, stirring and unpredictable with varying melodies, harmony, and rhythm. His voice is awash in dark lilting blues, grays and sepia tones…emotionally expressive. (Think Van Morrison, Tom Waits…) When listening to Rob, it’s like wearing a pair of comfortable old shoes. You’re home. Neither Rob’s or Marcus’s voices are what one would call conventionally or classically beautiful – no, they’re so much more. Rob’s singing immediately transcends you to smoky jazz bars or rustic, brick-walled basements. Glorious lyrics, poetic lyrics. Lonesome and appealing, and full of infinite possibilities. It has been said that a person does not create a style. You work and develop yourself; your style is an emanation from your own being. That’s a perfect way to describe both Rob’s and Marcus’s music style.

And who is Robert Pattinson, really? And Marcus Foster? Do we know them?Rob is not Edward Cullen. And Marcus is not Bob Dylan. A bit aloof and always mysterious, Robert Pattinson and Marcus Foster could both be described as a modern-day Lord Byron (1788-1824), the romantic poet and satirist. Byron created his own cult of personality, the concept of the Byronic hero – a defiant, melancholy, mysterious, brooding and highly romantic young man. Rob is mysterious. Screaming crowds make him withdraw even more into his inner world. Marcus is mysterious because we don’t know much about him – yet. Just as Byron’s influence on European poetry, music, novel, opera, and painting has been immense, so will the creative endeavors of Rob and Marcus, if they continue to walk on the edge in that magical land where all possibilities are infinite.

Meanwhile, Rob will continue to be the actor and the superstar – for now. Those possibilities have manifested. Marcus will continue touring the world and sharing with us his wonderful voice and music. But, who knows what tomorrow may bring?

Someday, hopefully, Rob will share his music with us again, if it’s his dream. And someday, hopefully, we will all get to know Marcus a little more. One thing for sure: Rob’s story of manifesting his acting dreams – his infinite possibilities – offers hope and optimism and reminds us all of who we are and what is possible.

Here are some excerpts from the interview which featured Rob mentions.

3. How many people auditioned for the role of Art? What was it about Robert Pattinson that got him the role?

Oliver Irving: We did auditions for this for well over a year in bursts. I feel like I must have seen every young male actor in London! I was looking for someone who would work well with the others actors I had in place to play Art’s friends. These were non-actors whose approach had been tailored while we made home movies over the years, so the actor for Art needed not to seem like he had been to drama school. Rob has said that at the time he was thinking of giving up acting and pursuing music as he was unhappy with roles he was getting offered – But pretty much straight away I knew he was right for the part. He had a sort of playful energy perhaps even naivety which he brought to the part and he really seemed to understand the characters.

5. Can you explain the process of creating the songs for the film? Were they written before filming and recorded afterwards?

Oliver Irving: The songs that art plays in the film where written by Me and Joe as we were writing the script – so there right from the start. We thought it would be fun to write these kind of clumsy songs that lay out Art’s mind state, but that contain a great little hook or melody that could be expanded to make up the score of the film…

Joe Hastings: Yes, we had songs in place for Art by late 2005 and the songs and incidental music developed as the screenplay progressed. We wrote Art’s songs together and I went away and tried to develop incidental music from Art’s ‘primitive’ tracks. The idea was to give the film a progressive aspect; for the music to shift with Art’s various moods through the film. We wanted the music to have a thematic progression and follow a melodic sensibility, and hopefully add to the overall cohesion. It was a challenge to develop distinctive arrangements that at the same time were an extension of his music.

Oliver Irving: we were adamant that they be recorded live on set as well and not re-recorded afterwards – that just sounds so phony. All the music in the film was done this way.

Joe Hastings: It was important that Rob was heard playing the tracks to add to the believability of his character, we wanted the songs to feel like ‘his’ and Rob really pulled this off.

7. What did Rob bring to the role of Art, musically speaking? Did he have any input on the composition of the songs and what guitars did Rob play during the film?

Oliver Irving: There is a great ‘jam session’ sequence where Ronny is playing his electronic stuff and Art is strumming away soulfully on the guitar while Nikki is singing away about random things. It was very funny to shoot and painful to watch!

Joe Hastings: Rob brought a kind of ownership to the music. Before the part was cast I was unsure as to whether someone could make the tracks seem real. I think Rob genuinely enjoyed playing the songs.

Rob played a battered old nylon string acoustic which Oliver ‘acquired’ from a school, we found a piece of rope in the studios we used as a set and decided that it would make the perfect guitar strap for Art. For the final sequence we deliberately chose a flashy if slightly tacky Guitar made by ‘Ovation’. It was one of those bowl backed fiber glass types that I hate, they’re the nouveau riche’s guitar of choice.

9. Lastly, since our community is for the appreciation of Rob’s music, we would love to see him continue doing music. What do you think of Rob’s musician side? Would you like to see more from him, musically?

Oliver Irving: Yes definitely – it is clearly something he really loves.

Joe Hastings: Rob is a lot better than the songs he performs in the film suggest, it’s very hard to play down your abilities in the way that Rob did so excellently in character as Art.
