Holliday also told us about her friend Robert Pattinson. The pair have worked together on a number of projects over the years including The Bad Mother’s Handbook in 2007 and Bel Ami in 2012 in which they played lovers. ‘He’s lovely,’ she says. ‘I’ve known him since his pre-Twilight days when he was a normal person and it was still like, “ooh you’re playing Cederic Diggory (in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire)”. He’s managed to keep very level headed and normal. I don’t understand how. I can’t fathom the idea of living a life like he lives. On the set of Bel Ami in Budpest there would be hundreds of screaming girls there at 5am and they would still be cordoned off when we finished. He had to move hotels because there were so many people outside his. One day he was signing autographs on the way home from work at 6am after a night shoot. Bless him, that’s an extra level of hard.’

Watching Rob on the Set as Daniel Gale:

Some fans of Robert Pattinson have been asking did I get much of a chance to meet him when he was working on the TBMH. Well I wasn’t on set much – just three days, plus I attended the read-through at ITV and the cast briefing session before filming started. I would like to have seen more, but I had teaching commitments and two small children to take care of, and the journey between Shropshire and Yorkshire proved tricky.

However, I remember watching them film the scene where Charlotte talks to Daniel about being pregnant, and they’d decided to set it outside with the actors sitting together on a garden bench. Yorkshire rain was drizzling down and Rob and Holliday were forced to shelter between takes under a big black golfing umbrella. I felt pretty sorry for them! Droplets of water beaded Rob’s velvet jacket and his glasses kept steaming up. Holliday looked frozen to death. But they carried on and did a grand job.

Towards the end of the shoot, when we were in the studio, I shared a coffee with Robert and asked him about how he’d got into drama. Although only 19, he’d already appeared in one of the Harry Potter films, and while we were shooting in Huddersfield, the BBC screened The Haunted Airman in which he played the lead role. Rob told me that he’d caught the acting bug while he was still in school, which of course was the relatively recent past for him.

But the incident I remember most is from the cast briefing, which took place in a church basement in London. This is where the actors get to quiz the writer on their characters’ motives and backgrounds. Holliday was asking about how to play Charlotte, and what elements defined her. So from the book I read a speech Daniel gives, where he’s trying to convey to Charlotte what a strong and independent person she is. He asks her if she’s ever smoked, and she says no, and goes on to give a bit of a lecture on why she hates cigarettes. She says that when she was offered her first cigarette, she coolly weighed up the pros and cons and made a decision and stuck to it. Daniel’s delighted with this response because, he claims, most people want to fit in at any cost whereas Charlotte’s always her own boss.

Anyway, shortly after I’d read this extract, the director called a break. Rob looked across at me and said, ‘Well, I’m off outside.’ He waggled his eyebrows at me. ‘For a smoke.’ It still makes me smile when I remember the dry way he said it.

Daniel Gale

What was it like seeing your work on adapted for television?

It was fascinating to watch. They shot the outside action in Otley because the funding was coming from Screen Yorkshire – oh, the irony! It was thrilling to meet established stars like Catherine Tate and to hear them speaking lines I’d only ever heard in my own head. Of course we didn’t realise what a star-in-the-making we had among us in R-Patz; Robert Pattinson was only 20. A striking-looking young man, though. I felt very proud to have my story broadcast on a mainstream channel to an audience of millions.

Robert Pattinson

Did you know Robert Pattinson and Catherine Tate starred in a TV movie? Back before R-Patz could fill a cinema by simply taking his shirt off, he appeared as a soppy teen in The Bad Mother’s Handbook.

Update:   @Belladova has provided the following information and translation:

Greek TV show “Mesimeriani Meleti” transcript

Please note that the show is a bit gossipy & not a always accurate at its reports.

Blonde reporter (named Eleonora Meleti): “We mentioned earlier Robert Pattinson because of the cheating scandal…He looks weird here” (when they show the pic he modeled as a teen).

There is discussion whether he looks good in the pic or not.

E. Meleti: “You could have mistaken him here (in the pic) for someone else”.

They talk about the preference they had for models with androgynous look back when Rob modeled & Meleti talks about her preference for Ryan Gosling.

E.Meleti: “Anyway, we have a video for the most handsome vampire Robert Pattinson who has many fans and we’ll show “Twilight” tonight on our channel (note: they showed “Eclipse”, not “Twilight” that day), so I think it’s a good chance to play this video.”

VIDEO:

The young model you see in the picture doesn’t in any way look like the sex symbol he is today. Young boy’s name is Robert Pattinson. He is the vampire causing frenzy to young people. He is young, beautiful, sexy and causes mass hysteria. With white skin as his trademark and his part as the most successful vampire to begin with Robert Pattinson started his career from modeling and his real passion is his rock band (Note: I know it’s inaccurate, but that’s what they said).

He was born in London and spent his childhood in Barnes, in the southwest London.

His father owned a car sales company while his mother was working in a modeling agency.

At the age of five Robert Pattinson was a pretty, tall and slim little boy with beautiful characteristics. His mother was the one who thought that due to her job she could book him jobs in teen ads helping him this way to earn money.

He was only 12 when he started working as a model and managed to have success 4 years later.

Then he started acting in school plays, where an agent noticed him and recommended him for minor roles in bigger plays.

That’s how he ended up playing a small part next to Reese Witherspoon portraying her son.

Endless castings and auditions followed and in 2004 he participated in Mira Nair’s “Vanity Fair” but his scene was finally cut.

(Note: I know it’s the same movie, but they are inaccurate here)

In 2005 he became Harry Potter’s classmate in “Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire”, the fourth movie of the series. The money he earned were enough for him to rent a small house in London in order to pursue a career in theater.

He got Edward Cullen’s part in “Twilight” beating 3.000 candidates and people started talking about the new Jude Law.

The audition took place at the director’s house along with Kristen Stewart. The two supposedly in love teenagers caught in the passion between a vampire and a mortal had to share a kiss without knowing the dangers this proximity could have.

Pattinson had no idea how to act in the scene and this was more than visible. After the audition Pattinson was sure he had failed and had already started packing when Hardwicke told him she had picked him as the leading man.

When the movie came out the success was so much more than what the producers had anticipated and Robert Pattinson became the idol of teen girls all around the world, while everywhere he appeared thousands of girls were asking him to bite them.

The shooting of the next movie started immediately and Robert Pattinson signed a ten million dollar contract. “New Moon’s” success was tremendous grossing in it’s opening weekend more than 300 million dollars in the US, thus becoming the movie with the highest gross in it’s opening weekend of all all times.

Same frenzy followed the release of “Eclipse”, third installment of the saga, as well as “Breaking Dawn’s” release, skyrocketing this way his career and fame.

Success and millions of dollars aside Pattinson also found love because of “Twilight” meeting Kristen Stewart. Their love has covered many magazines and newspapers and has lived cheating and break ups,

Besides an actor Pattinson is also a very good musician as he professionally plays piano and guitar and his only wish is to have a house in the country someday, where he can find peace away from the crowds that chase him as he says.

Back to the panel: There is discussion whether they like him or not. The brunette (Florinda Petruccelli) tells a story about Rob – when he once went to a casting in England with his manager it was obvious he was standing out among the others, because he simply was different.

They say he resembles James Dean and there is talk about his accent which is obvious in interviews and not in movies. Also there is talk about the cheating and E. Meleti expresses her doubts whether it’s outcome (apology and getting back together) was good for their image.

Fassbender, Law, Irvine. It almost seems unfair that Holliday has Robert Pattinson on her co-star list, too. She starred with him in 2007’s TV drama, The Bad Mother’s Handbook when she was 18, and in last year’s Bel Ami. ‘He’s really easy going,’ she says of the Twilight heartthrob. ‘And open – amazingly so considering he’s so closely scrutinised. He’s still managed to maintain a sense of self. [On Bel Ami] you couldn’t get to set half the time because there were so many screaming girls. Even at 5am. It was mad. He had to change hotels because there were so many fans outside one he couldn’t get in. I’ve watched him live with that and it would send me insane. There’s no way could I cope with that.’

Thank you to @clarabelg1 and @robsessedblog for the tip!
